Safer Cornwall and Argyle Community Trust raise awareness of local support services through half-term event

Cornwall Council News feed - Thu, 03/12/2020 - 10:21

The Safer Camborne and Safer Redruth partnership teamed up with Plymouth Argyle and Heartlands over half term to host a free community day for young people and families in the local area.

The hugely experienced coaches from Plymouth Argyle delivered a range of activities, from football, handball to dodgeball and Heartlands even hosted an ice rink.

During the event, partner agencies from Safer Camborne and Safer Redruth were on hand to meet young people and their families and showcase the work and support they provide to local communities. The agencies included the Penwith Community Development Trust, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, We Are With You Cornwall (formerly Addaction), YZUP, Coastline, Headstart Kernow, One Vision, Barnardo’s, First Light and Together for Families.

Provision for young people is a priority for the Safer Camborne and Safer Redruth Partnership, a partnership made up of the agencies mentioned above and many more including Redruth and Camborne Town Councils, Redruth Chamber of Commerce, Camborne BID, Devon and Cornwall Police and We Are With You Cornwall. To find out more visit safercornwall.co.uk.

The event was paid for with funding granted to the partnership by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. Other priorities for Safer Camborne and Redruth include anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse, alcohol and drug related harm and recovery, and community resilience and engagement.

“Over the course of last summer my office carried out an extensive survey and in which the people of Devon and Cornwall told us they wanted to see the police budget focussed on preventing crime. More engagement with young people was a recurring theme of what they told us,” said Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez.

“Safer Camborne and Safer Redruth’s engagement with young people is helping to embed community safety messages and is absolutely in line with the priorities of my Police and Crime Plan.”

Kyle Marks, West Cornwall Sports and Participation Assistant Manager for Argyle Community Trust said: “At Argyle Community Trust we have the pleasure of working with thousands of children across Devon and Cornwall each week. It was an absolute pleasure to run this event in partnership with the Safer Cornwall team at Heartlands and also give the opportunity to local agencies within the Camborne and Redruth area to showcase their work and assist the young people in any way they could."

"By using the power of sport, we were able to put together this community event and help tackle some of the issues that are currently ongoing with young people in Camborne and Redruth by engaging around 100 of them on the completely free day at Heartlands, with all of them leaving with more knowledge and support of the assistance that is available to them whenever they need it. We look forward to working with the Safer Cornwall team again soon”.

Rob Nolan, Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Protection, said: “Safer Camborne and Safer Redruth are about so much more than keeping young people and their families safe. They are about encouraging sports activity, making good life choices, and promoting community spirit. All this was in evidence at the Heartlands event, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.”

More information:

The Safer Cornwall partnership is the statutory Community Safety Partnership for Cornwall and is made up of Cornwall Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, National Probation Service, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall Community Rehabilitation Company and NHS Kernow.

It has worked to create the Safer Camborne and Safer Redruth Delivery Plan which aims to tackle community safety issues, improve public reassurance, reduce the risk of harm to the community and protect vulnerable groups locally.
